Summertime — and the Livin’ Is Easy

Chelsea, Massachusetts

The past week brought intense heat and humidity, making those of us fortunate enough to work and live in air-conditioned spaces grateful for the relief.

A trip to the beach provides little escape from the oppressive conditions, as southwest winds persistently carry hot air across the sand toward the ocean along Boston’s East-facing coastline.

Still, despite how difficult this weather has been for many—and we should remember that heat-related deaths exceed those from cold—won’t we all be longing for early August warmth when January arrives?

With only three weeks remaining before the Labor Day weekend, summer’s days are numbered. We ought to make the most of our Triple-H weather (hazy, hot, and humid) while it lasts. As the great Nat King Cole sang in the early 1960s:

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer

Those days of soda and pretzels and beer

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer

You’ll wish that summer could always be here
