A Chelsea man was arrested last week after damaging the newly painted mural at the Chelsea Walk, though the incident hasn’t dampened community enthusiasm for the reclaimed space.
At 2:52 p.m. on Aug. 20, a CPD officer responded to Luther Place after being approached by someone reporting destruction of private property and defacement of City property.
The person who contacted police was a painter contracted by the City to work on the Chelsea Walk mural. For decades, the Walk had been largely inaccessible to the public, but this summer community members and GreenRoots have worked to transform it into a welcoming destination through mural painting and organized events.
Not everyone has welcomed these improvements. Some individuals who previously used the Walk for illicit purposes have objected to the revitalization efforts.
After reviewing footage from a city camera at the location, the officer was able to identify the person responsible for the vandalism.
The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody.
Winston Brown, 51, of 4 Washington Ave., was charged with vandalizing property.
