Boys soccer team wins two, now 8-0-2
Remaining undefeated with an 8-0-2 record, the Chelsea High boys soccer team captured victories in both contests this past week.
This past Tuesday, the Red Devils dominated their traditional Large Division rival Northeast Regional in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference, posting a 5-1 victory.
The Red Devils built a commanding 3-0 advantage in the opening 11 minutes. Senior Gabriel Contreras got things started for Chelsea at 4:00, receiving a long pass from his brother, center back Angel Contreras, at the top of the box. After settling the ball with one touch, Contreras fired a shot past the Northeast keeper.
Three minutes later, Gabriel Contreras set up the second goal with a corner kick that center back and captain Jose Gutierrez headed into the net.
Chelsea’s leading scorer Delmer Romero, who has 18 goals on the season, delivered a decisive third goal moments after that. Making a strong move at the top of the box, Romero launched a shot that cleanly beat the Northeast keeper.
The Red Devils carried their 3-0 lead into halftime and extended it midway through the second half when Eric Barahona fired a rocket from 30 yards that caught the Northeast keeper slightly out of position. Romero added another goal in the final 20 minutes off a through ball from Gerson Hernandez, with Northeast scoring once as well.
“We came out flying,” CHS assistant coach Evan Protasowicki noted. “We got the big lead and never were threatened after that.”
Chelsea dominated Nashoba Tech last Thursday with a 7-1 victory. Gabriel Contreras, assisted by Carlos Lopez, and senior Carlos Ayala, with an assist from Gabriel Garcia, staked Chelsea to a 2-0 first-half lead.
Delmer Romero then took over, scoring four goals to lead the Red Devils. Gabriel Contreras added his second goal of the game for the final 7-1 margin.
Head coach Mick Milutinovic’s squad will attempt to clinch the CAC Large title when they travel to Shawsheen today (Thursday). The Red Devils visit Presentation of Mary next Tuesday before hosting Greater Lowell the following Thursday.
CHS BOYS, GIRLS RUN PAST GR. LOWELL
Senior captains Yarid Deras and Justin Turner led their respective teams to victories over Greater Lowell last Wednesday with impressive individual performances.
The boys’ team secured the win as senior captain Julio Valladares finished in second place, 47 seconds behind Turner. After Greater Lowell took the next two spots, Chelsea claimed the following three places to clinch the meet.
Junior Jazmany Reyes, senior Wuilfido Hernandez, and sophomore Oscar Amaya placed fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively. Red Devil Limilson Tavares also contributed to the scoring by finishing ahead of Greater Lowell’s fourth and fifth runners for a final score of 21-36.
CHS head coach Don Fay remarked, “We ran a lot tougher than last week,” The boys’ squad improved to 6-1 on the season. Yesterday (Wednesday), the Red Devils were set to host a tri-meet at Admirals Hill against Northeast Regional and Medford.
On the girls’ side, senior captain Jocelyn Poste crossed the line in fourth place after Deras. Yarelis Torres finished fifth and Sarei Carreto took sixth.
Junior Karina Avalos secured the victory with a ninth place finish, giving the Lady Red Devils a final score of 25-30.
The win improved the Lady Red Devils to 6-1. Yesterday (Wednesday), they were scheduled to host Notre Dame of Tyngsboro and Northeast Regional at Admiral’s Hill.
CHS GIRLS SOCCER WINS TWO OF THREE CONTESTS
The Chelsea High girls soccer team had a productive week, capturing victories in two of three matches against Greater Lawrence and Nashoba Tech.
The Lady Red Devils defeated Greater Lawrence 5-3 last Monday, with Nancy Galdamez and Damaris Erazo each scoring two goals. Elena Ruiz contributed one goal and two assists, while Kimberlyn Larios added an assist.
Three days later, Chelsea edged Nashoba Tech 3-2. Leading scorer Galdamez netted two goals, and Gitu Degefa scored once. Erazo provided two assists and Ruiz contributed one.
Between these victories came the squad’s only loss of the week, a 2-0 defeat to Whittier Tech last Tuesday.
CHS head coach Randy Grajal stated, “The group is finding its rhythm and we are looking forward to our upcoming games,” The squad now holds a 3-6-1 overall record and 3-5-1 mark in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.
The team will host Notre Dame Academy today (Thursday) and welcome Presentation of Mary Academy next Tuesday.
CHS FOOTBALL TEAM FACES MINUTEMAN TONIGHT
The Chelsea High football team had a shortened practice week before facing Minuteman Regional today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the Woburn High field.
The Red Devils suffered a 32-6 loss at Whittier Tech this past Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea’s standout moment came when Edward Escobar threw a 67 yard touchdown pass to Walter Gonzalez in the third period. Escobar entered the game in the second quarter after starting quarterback Matt Singh-Carranza departed with an injury.
Whittier Tech capitalized on special teams play to build a 26-0 halftime lead. After the break, Chelsea made defensive adjustments and allowed only a fourth quarter touchdown when both teams’ junior varsity players were on the field.
CHS head coach Rasi Chau stated, “This is our growing-pain season,” “Our kids continue to keep getting better every week and I am proud of every single one of them and I’m proud of my staff, who continue to keep coaching these kids up every week.”

Bruins pick up the pace
The Bruins will host the Edmonton Oilers tonight (Thursday), featuring ‘master on ice’ Connor McDavid and former Bruin Milan Lucic. The Oilers arrive at TD Garden well rested after opening their 2018-19 season at home on Saturday, October 6th, with a 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, leaving them at 0-1-0 with four days between games. Boston has compiled a 2-1-0 record, including recent victories over the Buffalo Sabres and a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday, as they begin their current three-game homestand.
Head Coach Bruce Cassidy continues to evaluate his roster despite the two-game winning streak. The China trip may have affected his ability to solidify the lineup, though early season is typically when coaches experiment with forward combinations and defensive pairings to find the optimal mix. The preseason split, with half the team playing in China while the other half practiced locally, may or may not prove significant as the season progresses.
Boston’s performance against the Senators highlighted Patrice Bergeron’s critical importance to the Bruins. His hat trick on Monday brought his goal total to four in three games. The top line of Bergeron with wingers Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak, widely regarded as the best line in the NHL, accumulated 11 points in the Senators victory, with a combined 18 points through three games.
Cassidy expressed satisfaction with Anders Bjork’s play, Danton Heinen’s progress, and newcomers Chris Wagner, who scored his first Bruin goal, and John Moore. Charlie McAvoy continues his strong, steady performance with three assists against the Senators, while Noel Acciara and Sean Kuraly have performed at solid levels so far.
After tonight’s matchup with the Oilers, the Bruins will host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday at 3:00pm before embarking on a four-game road trip over seven nights. This includes three West Coast contests: the Calgary Flames (Wednesday 10/17 @ 9:30pm), Edmonton (Thursday 10/18 @ 9:00pm), and the Vancouver Canucks (Saturday 10/20 @ 10:00pm), concluding with a stop in Ottawa on Tuesday, 10/23 @ 7:30 p.m.
