For the fifth consecutive year, the Chelsea Fire Department is running a toy collection drive at the Central Fire Station to support families in need, with donations being delivered to Toys for Tots in mid-December.
According to Capt. Phil Rogers, the Department is asking community members to contribute new, non-violent toys that remain unwrapped. The collection period runs through Dec. 14, and donations can be dropped off at the Station in Fay Square daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“We have started our annual Toys for Tots campaign,” said Rogers. “The toy drive ends a little early this year on Dec. 14, which is a little easier. We need all kinds of new toys and they should be unwrapped. Toys for Tots only accepts new toys. We have really enjoyed doing this over the years, and the people here have been so generous. We’re trying to make this an annual thing and it’s been working very well. If we can put a smile on a kid’s face, that’s a good thing.”
Beyond toys, the Fire Department has launched a winter clothing drive this year to assist St. Luke’s Food Pantry.
After several firefighters participated in serving Thanksgiving dinner at the Pantry, Rogers noted that the experience revealed significant needs there, describing what he observed as “eye opening.”
The Department responded by establishing the clothing collection initiative.
Rogers explained that they are seeking new or gently used gloves, hats, coats, mittens, and scarves. For individuals experiencing homelessness, the Department is specifically requesting new packages of wool socks.
Winter clothing donations will be accepted throughout December alongside the toy drive.
