Wednesday afternoon brought a lockdown to the John Silber Early Learning Center, also known as Shurtleff School, following a police response to gunfire on Congress Avenue.
No one sustained injuries in the incident.
The ShotSpotter detection system was activated at 1:30 p.m. at 101 Congress Ave., which is located near the school. Shortly after, police located a man in the vicinity who was concealing himself. Officers discovered he was carrying a replica firearm and placed him under arrest. Subsequent witness accounts, however, indicated that he was not responsible for firing the shots but was instead the intended target.
Additional suspects remain at large, and Chelsea Police continue their investigation.
Officers remained present at the school throughout the lockdown period, and normal operations resumed without further incident. Students and staff were dismissed by 2:30 p.m.
