The holiday season has arrived, and for most Americans it represents a time of joy when the abundance available in our prosperous nation becomes especially visible.
Yet many of our neighbors face a starkly different reality. For those experiencing homelessness or living on the edge of poverty, the holidays offer little cause for celebration. These individuals lack the means to participate in the festive traditions that bring such meaning and happiness to others during this time of year.
We encourage those of us fortunate enough to have resources to take action during the holidays, however modest, to bring some brightness into the lives of those for whom this season holds no joy.
The act of giving to others represents perhaps the greatest gift we can offer ourselves. Research from psychologists demonstrates that generosity and kindness toward others produces a sense of fulfillment that surpasses any personal indulgence.
We call on all our readers to contribute in whatever way they can—whether through donations to organizations like Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army bell ringers, or community food banks, among others—to support those who are struggling this holiday season.
