A curious delicacy that blends tortilla with cheese and delivers pure satisfaction, the pupusa has become central to Chelsea’s food culture. Nearly a dozen restaurants throughout the city have developed their own interpretations of this beloved dish, and this spring the Chelsea Prospers initiative will celebrate it with a community gathering.
Prepare yourself for an appetite.
On Feb. 6, during a Chelsea Prospers committee meeting, Mimi Graney and Edwardo Chacon introduced plans for the event, positioning it as the first major initiative in a season that will also feature the recently-announced Chelsea Night Market.
“We have been reaching out to all the local
restaurants, and we have seven on board so far,” Chacon stated. “A lot were
surprised at first. They were very surprised the City was doing this. The
reaction was pretty positive though and we will have a lot of participation.”
The fiesta aims to unite the city’s top pupusa makers in competition for the 2019 Pupusa Champion of Chelsea title. Scheduled to take place at Emiliano’s Fiesta, the event will be held indoors.
Both judges and audience members will vote to determine which vendor produces the finest pupusa. The city will draw inspiration from El Santaneco Restaurant, which hosts its own pupusa-eating contest each November.
Additional categories will recognize the best salsa and the most imaginative vendor booth design.
Graney noted that organizers plan to include a booth exploring pupusa history and culture, while the event’s center space will showcase a live demonstration of homemade pupusa preparation.
A proposal has emerged to invite the Police Department and Fire Department to participate in a pupusa-eating competition during the fiesta, though this remains under consideration.
“The idea is to
bring the community around this special food item, whether it’s a contest or an
event,” Chacon noted. “We want them to come out with their family and enjoy
their city.”
