Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) unveiled a redesigned bulldog mascot following more than a year of careful research, reflection and evaluation. The new Athletics Bulldog design was introduced to the College community at the Faculty/Staff Forum held on March 12.
The updated mascot depicts a bulldog in motion, displaying energy and forward-focused determination in pursuit of achievement. This design reflects both the Athletics program’s mission and the distinctive character of BHCC.
While the bulldog has served as BHCC Athletics’ mascot for many years, Dr. Loreto Jackson, the College’s new Director of Athletics who arrived in 2017, recognized an opportunity to modernize the symbol. According to Dr. Jackson, “The former bulldog had many different renditions,” “The designs were not unique to BHCC, and, more importantly, did not embody the philosophy of BHCC.”
To guide this initiative, the College partnered with Phoenix Design Works, a nationally recognized brand identity firm. Through extensive research and consultation with stakeholders, Jackson sought to move away from traditional bulldog stereotypes—those of being aggressive, arrogant, combative or lethargic. The new BHCC Bulldog instead embodies respect, determination, competitive drive and loyalty. A key consideration was creating a gender-neutral mascot free from the conventional spiked collar imagery.
