New Group Looks to Raise the Profile of Bicycling, Pedestrian Issues

Chelsea, Massachusetts

As National Bicycle Month gets underway, Chelsea is seeing the emergence of a fresh organization dedicated to advancing cycling and pedestrian safety. The newly formed Chelsea Bike and Pedestrian Committee aims to build awareness and momentum around transportation alternatives to vehicles.

This winter, the committee came together with ambitious plans. Their inaugural community bike ride is scheduled for May 8 at 6 p.m., marking the beginning of what organizers hope will be an ongoing effort.

Spearheading the initiative is Asad Rahman, a Broadway resident who cycles to Boston daily. For years, Rahman has been engaged in promoting bicycle safety and collaborated with City Planners to develop a stronger community focused on cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

The response has exceeded expectations. What Rahman anticipated might be a gradual process has instead gained traction quickly, with multiple events already in the planning stages.

“More than ever, I think Chelsea is at a crossroads to put people and bicycles first instead of cars,” Rahman explained. “We’re a City with five or six street lights and several thousand people and cars go very, very fast. We hope we can shift the paradigm that people come first and cars come second…Right now we have a passionate group of people in Chelsea, and we’ll ride around town on May 8thfor about a half-hour and then have a social time to continue building this community.”

Working alongside the City and MassBike, the Committee is organizing various initiatives including bike repair workshops and a bike rodeo to be held at upcoming municipal events such as Fiesta Verano and the Night Markets.

Those interested in participating can find the group on Facebook under BikeWalkChelsea or attend the May 8 gathering at City Hall beginning at 6 p.m.
