Just how much excitement can Luther Place hold? Chelsea residents will discover the answer when the inaugural Chelsea Night Market opens downtown on Saturday, June 8, launching what will become a series of five monthly gatherings.
The Chelsea Night Market represents a collaborative effort between the City of Chelsea’s downtown revitalization program, Chelsea Prospers, and Jukebox, a local events production company. Together they are bringing new energy to this previously overlooked downtown area.
The transformation of the block began last year when GreenRoots partnered with acclaimed Chelsea muralist Silvia López Chavez, one of Massachusetts’s premier muralists, to paint a vibrant mural along the Chelsea Walk.
That pedestrian passage now serves as the gateway to the next stage of revitalization, with the Chelsea Night Market activating the space.
According to Edwardo Chacon of Jukebox, “Vendors are
still being accepted for future markets and there’s always room for more
artists and performers to join in. Our priority is to engage as much local
talent as possible. We’re excited by all the energy growing around the market
and the new connections we’re making. This is going to be epic.”
Within the expansive parking lot on Cherry Street, situated behind Broadway businesses between Fourth and Fifth Streets, visitors will encounter a transformed venue each month, complete with fresh attractions and activities.
Over a dozen vendor booths will showcase local businesses, artists, merchants and community organizations. The merchandise spans new items, vintage goods, thrift finds and handcrafted pieces.
Jack’s Men’s Shop will present emerging menswear brands, while Allen’s Cut Rate offers premium fragrances. Beaded Inspiration and Sacred Soul Fire display hand-crafted jewelry. Dandelion District and High Energy Vintage stock vintage treasures ranging from classic video games to clothing and collectibles.
Jukebox operates its own booth selling local merchandise celebrating the 02150 zip code, including Chelsea-branded T-shirts and totes. Revenue from these sales supports future improvements to Luther Place.
Additional tents will host community organizations and artists throughout the venue.
Attendees can try their hand at Archery Games Boston, connect with the Chelsea LGBTQ Coalition, or engage with Phoenix Charter Academy Chelsea representatives.
Local dining establishments are also participating with street food offerings.
Broadway House of Pizza will serve grilled sandwiches, Chung Wah provides Chinese cuisine, and Pan y Café offers empanadas.
Entertainment will feature multiple performers on the main stage.
Comedian and actor Chase Abel, host of the podcast “Ready Set Blow” with Randy V and a fixture at Boston’s premier comedy clubs, will serve as MC.
A band led by Bengisu and Tuzcu will perform their distinctive Turkish-funk-rock sound.
The eclectic musical lineup defies easy categorization but promises to energize the crowd.
DJ Tempo Sauve will deliver upbeat house electronica throughout the evening, maintaining momentum. Word has it that comedians from a recent Tu Casa show may make appearances as well.
The evening’s centerpiece will be the Boston Circus Guild, who will circulate among attendees to display their remarkable abilities and costumes before taking the stage at 9:30 p.m. for a 20-minute fire performance concluding the night.
The 456 Broadway wall will serve as a canvas for temporary mini murals created by local artists, with new designs appearing monthly and framing the main stage.
