The Massport Board of Directors has identified two finalists for the position of Massport CEO: Brian Golden, who heads Boston Planning and Development, and Lisa Weiland, the organization’s Port Director.
During a special meeting scheduled for Thursday, the Massport board will make its selection between Golden and Weiland for the $300,000 annual position overseeing Logan International Airport and the Conley Shipping Terminal in Southie.
The selection process began with a nationwide search that attracted 170 applicants. The board narrowed the field progressively, first to 40 candidates, then to 10, and subsequently to four before Golden and Weiland emerged as the final two.
Massport board member and Eastie resident John Nucci outlined his priorities for evaluating the candidates: “fblikebutton_button” “I want to hear three things from the two candidates; their vision, how familiar and experienced they are in working the levers of local and federal government, and maybe most importantly, what experience they have working with local impacted neighborhoods,” “Those were former CEO Thomas Glynn’s strengths
and it’s what we need again right now.”
Weiland was promoted from Acting Port Director to Port Director by the Massport board in 2016. She has held the Acting Port Director role since March 2015 and previously served as Maritime’s Chief Administrative Officer. In her current position as Port Director, she manages planning, development, marketing, operations, security, financial management, administration and maintenance of Massport’s non-aviation properties. Her earlier roles at Massport included Director of HR Strategy and Employment and Director of Corporate Planning and Analysis. Weiland joined Massport in 2006.
Before coming to Massport, Weiland worked as a consultant at Bain & Company on health care and consumer products accounts, and held various news and political positions at CNN. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
Golden has served as BPDA Director since 2014, functioning as the agency’s chief executive. His responsibilities include overseeing community-engaged planning, regulation of major real estate development, management of BPDA real property, and workforce training programs.
An attorney since 1993, Golden previously represented the Allston-Brighton neighborhood as a Massachusetts House member. His career also includes service as New England Regional Director at the US Department of Health and Human Services, Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy, and Board member at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.
Golden has maintained a military career as a U.S. Army officer for more than twenty years in both active duty and reserve status, with deployments to Bosnia, Iraq, and Israel/West Bank.
Golden is a Boston Latin School and Harvard College graduate. He earned a Master’s degree from the U.S. Army War College and a law degree from the College of William and Mary’s School of Law.
