The Boston Foundation has awarded Apollinaire Theatre Company a $45,000 grant through its Open Door Grants program to establish a Resident Artist Program at the Chelsea Theatre Works. The grant will support the launch of this initiative, which aims to provide long-term resources and support for Boston’s performing arts community. Apollinaire Theatre constructed the new Black Box Theatre at the Chelsea Theatre Works in response to a growing facilities crisis in the Boston area, a situation that became particularly evident with the 2014 closure of the Factory Theatre in the South End. To better understand the needs of Boston’s theatre artists, Apollinaire held meetings with local performers and collaborated with them to design a space that would not only replace the Factory Theatre but also provide amenities previously unavailable to the region’s small theatre community, such as on-site rehearsal and shop space.
Apollinaire Theatre emphasized that theatre companies require more than just a physical space—they also need ongoing support and resources. “Theatre companies need more than a home; they need support and resources,” said Apollinaire. Boston presents unique challenges for theatre artists, many of whom struggle to balance their artistic pursuits with day jobs and family responsibilities. While these artists manage to create art, the current model is not sustainable for individuals, small theatre companies, or the broader community. The Open Door Grant will allow Apollinaire to better serve Boston’s performing arts community, which in turn will help expand Chelsea’s growing arts scene and create new opportunities for local residents.
The Resident Artist Program will offer selected companies free rent in the Black Box Theatre, access to rehearsal space, and shop space for set construction, along with a project stipend. These benefits will allow companies to redirect their budgets toward areas of greatest need, such as higher artist compensation, expanded marketing efforts, or the ability to produce more ambitious works. The program also encourages collaboration among resident companies, who will meet regularly to share ideas, brainstorm solutions, and leverage shared resources. This will create a multi-purpose incubation space where artists and companies can work together throughout all stages of their creative process. In addition, resident companies will be expected to contribute to the local community, with one resident spot reserved for a Chelsea-based artist or group. “At a time when our research has shown both the need for greater support for artists and the benefits of artists’ involvement in the community, we are pleased to be able to support Apollinare Theatre’s Resident Artist program with an Open Door Grant,” said Orlando Watkins, Vice President for Program at the Boston Foundation. “We look forward to seeing how this program builds and strengthens the network of artists who call Chelsea home.”
Information sessions for the program will be held at the Chelsea Theatre Works on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 18 at 1 p.m., and Monday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. All interested artists are encouraged to attend.
