The Chelsea Record takes pleasure in reconnecting with former residents and long-time readers, which is exactly what happened when we encountered Lester Erickson, a former Chelsea resident, on Wednesday morning.
It was a delight to see Lester and exchange memories of his time at Shurtleff Junior High School, where he served as ninth grade class president (tenth grade marked the beginning of Chelsea High attendance), played as a standout on the Shurtleff School basketball team, led the school traffic squad as captain, and earned recognition as one of the school’s most popular students and finest athletes.
“I peaked in the ninth grade,” Lester shared with us, smiling.
Beginning at age 14, Lester worked at Brigham’s Restaurant on Broadway. According to Lester, it was Shurtleff School Principal Joseph E. Henry, now deceased, who assisted him in securing that initial position.
The Brigham’s Restaurant was a beloved establishment, renowned for its famous ice cream brand. Over time, Lester rose to become manager of the Brigham’s location within what was then a flourishing restaurant chain.
Throughout his years in Chelsea, Lester maintained a friendly demeanor and developed strong relationships with his patrons.
Currently residing on the North Shore, Lester maintains his connection to Chelsea by following the Chelsea High sports teams, particularly during the State Tournament.
Like other Shurtleff School students privileged to study under English teacher and coach Arnold Goodman, Lester cherished his memories of Mr. Goodman, who passed away this year.
Lester Erickson represents a meaningful connection to the Chelsea of yesteryear.
Once a Chelsea kid, always a Chelsea kid.
