Meson Bourdeau, a 29-year-old who has lived in Lynn his entire life, developed a passion for community service after participating in a high school trip to Mexico. He became determined to give back locally.
“I had always been aware of Big Brothers Big Sisters” Bourdeau explained, “Becoming a Big Brother seemed like the best way to give back directly to my community”.
Today, Bourdeau volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, dedicating his Sunday afternoons to mentor Josh, a 9-year-old who lives with his grandmother in Lynn. Recognizing the program’s value through her work as a social worker, Josh’s grandmother enrolled him on the waiting list at just five years old. When Josh turned 8, he was paired with Meson, a match that delighted the entire family.
By January, Meson and Josh will have been together for a full year. Research shows that young people matched with mentors for at least one year demonstrate increased self-confidence, improved academic performance, reduced engagement in risky behavior, and stronger relationships with adults.
The pair fills their time with movies, city exploration, and events such as sporting games, museum visits, and concerts—opportunities made possible through donations to Big Brothers. Beyond these outings, everyday moments strengthen their bond. When Josh’s grandmother suggested a haircut outing one weekend, the activity became a cherished routine between mentor and mentee.
“We’re excited to experience new things together,” Bourdeau says.
Bourdeau has witnessed Josh’s growth through their mentorship. “It’s great to see him responding so well to the program”, he shared.
While the relationship has clearly benefited “Little Brother Josh”, Bourdeau acknowledges that the experience has profoundly affected him as well.
“Being a Big Brother is one of the most fulfilling things that I’ve ever done” said Bourdeau.
