Desayna Christmas gets her hands as close as she can stand to the electrostatic globe at the
new Lewis Latimer Museum, which was unveiled Tuesday night along with a presentation in
City Hall for the 150th Civil War Anniversary. She was joined by (right to left) Dhalia Christmas,
Chawanzi Mowena and Dakeya Christmas.
On Tuesday evening, the Lewis Latimer Society of Chelsea and Historian George Ostler organized a dual celebration featuring the unveiling of a 150th Civil War Anniversary historical exhibit in the City Hall Gallery and the debut of the new Lewis Latimer Museum at the Chelsea Public Library. Ron and Leo Robinson welcomed an enthusiastic crowd to the City Hall Gallery, where exhibits showcasing Chelsea’s historic figures who contributed to the Civil War in various capacities were on display. Among those featured were late Mayor Frank Fay, who served as a medic in nearly every major conflict, and a Chelsea nurse who advocated for equitable treatment of both black and white soldiers.
The new Lewis Latimer Museum subsequently opened its doors to the public at the library, where carefully curated artifacts and historical presentations are now on view. Going forward, the Museum will be accessible to the public through appointment scheduling.
