The Chelsea High boys basketball team defeated two more opponents this past week, positioning themselves well to capture a Commonwealth Conference championship. Last Friday, the Red Devils beat Northeast Regional Vocational School 84-48, followed by a 66-28 victory over Shawsheen Tech on Tuesday. Under Coach Jay Seigal, the team has compiled a 16-2 record and remains undefeated in the Comm. Conference, sitting two games ahead of Lynn Tech with two league contests remaining. Either of the two upcoming wins would secure an outright title for Chelsea. Cesar Castro led the scoring in both games, tallying 29 points against Northeast and 21 against Shawsheen. In the Shawsheen game, Will Hernandez contributed 13 points and Craig Szalkowski added 10. Against Northeast, Felix Crespo scored 13 and Joe Rivera contributed 12 to join Castro in double figures. The Northeast game remained competitive early, with both teams tied 15-15 after the first quarter. The Red Devils then dominated the second period, outscoring Northeast 25-10 to reach a 40-25 halftime advantage, eventually cruising to victory. The Shawsheen contest proved lopsided from the start, with the visitors unable to keep pace with Chelsea, allowing Seigal to distribute playing time among his roster. Chelsea’s season concludes with a Friday home game against Whittier featuring Senior Night celebrations. The team will then travel to Greater Lawrence on Tuesday for their final regular season game. “Obviously, we want to win these games in order to win the league title and have a perfect league record,” said Seigal, “but we also want to give ourselves a high seeding in the state tournament.” Having already secured their tournament berth, the Red Devils’ pursuit of an 18-2 final record would virtually guarantee them at least two home games in the tournament.
