This coming Monday, Sept. 1, marks the federal Labor Day holiday in the United States of America. President Grover Cleveland designated it as an official holiday in 1894 to honor worker contributions.
Throughout the community, people will observe the occasion through backyard barbecues and various celebrations. For many, Labor Day represents the symbolic close of summer, despite autumn still being several weeks away on the calendar.
The holiday also coincides with the start of the academic year for most students and the beginning of college football. The National Football League will launch its season the following Thursday (Sept. 4).
