A tractor-trailer dump truck transporting sand for the Winthrop Beach revitalization project overturned at Brown Circle rotary in Revere around 11:30 a.m. today, scattering its cargo across the roadway.
Revere Police held primary jurisdiction over the rotary and led the crash investigation. The Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, known as the Truck Team, also arrived on scene to assess the truck’s compliance with federal and state motor carrier regulations.
HM Morales Trucking, Inc., based in Chelsea, owned the vehicle—a 1994 Peterbilt tractor coupled to a 2009 dump-truck style trailer. The truck’s operator, Miguel Hernandez, 23, sustained injuries and was transported for medical care.
At the time of the crash, the truck was transporting fill material from Saugus destined for Winthrop.
Following the State Police Truck Team’s investigation, HM Morales Trucking received citations for multiple violations:
– Tractor violations: brake linings on the left side of the first axle were insufficient, and brakes on the right side of the third axle were defective.
– Trailer violations: The fourth axle had cracked air bag supports on both sides, the fifth axle had cracked air bag supports on both sides, and the inspection sticker had expired.
The rotary remained closed for roughly 2 hours. Early findings suggest the operator was traveling at excessive speed for the rotary conditions, which contributed to the crash. Contact Revere Police for information regarding any citations issued to the operator for speeding or other violations.
