A Chelsea native and former 10-year Revere resident, Stephen J. Woodland of Southborough passed away on Sunday, October 12 at Marlborough Hospital in Marlborough. He was 62 years old. He had been unexpectedly stricken at his home early Wednesday morning.
Woodland was born and raised in Chelsea, where he attended St. Rose Grammar School and St. Rose High School before graduating from Chelsea High School in 1970. He pursued higher education at Suffolk University and earned a degree from North Shore Community College in 1975. His professional career spanned 32 years at T.J. Maxx International, where he served as Assistant Vice President of Loss & Prevention.
Known for his energetic nature, Woodland brought professionalism and joy to his workplace. He was recognized among his peers for his exceptional performance and remarkable rapport with colleagues.
A devoted long-time member of the Altar Servers Guild of St. Rose Parish and the Chelsea Knights of Columbus, Woodland held a deep passion for animals and actively supported the care of abandoned animals.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jo-Ann (Savignano); his daughter, Olivia J. Woodland of Southborough; his sister, Chelsea Police Lt. Nancy E. Haumann and her husband, Retired Chelsea Police Sergeant Joseph J. Haumann of Saugus; his mother-in-law, Joan M. (Arnold) Savignano of Revere; and siblings-in-law June M. Bowman and her late husband, Dr. James F. Bowman, PhD of Newton, Mary Ellen Wilson and her late husband, Robert J. of Revere, and Paul S. Savignano and his wife, Joan M. Niles of Peabody. He was the son of the late Joseph and Rita (Fahey) Woodland and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
His funeral service takes place today, Thursday, October 16 at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel, Elm Street, Everett. Private interment will follow at the Family Estates at Woodlawn Cemetery. Alfred Francis O’Brien, Jr.
Truck Driver
A six-year resident of Everett and former Chelsea resident, Alfred Francis O’Brien, Jr. died unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon, October 8 at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett. He was 66 years old.
Born in Chelsea to the late Alfred F. and Lillian A. (Gaddes) O’Brien, he attended Chelsea Public Schools and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1966. Following his high school graduation, O’Brien enlisted in the US Army on December 15, 1966. During his three years of service in the Vietnam War, Private O’Brien earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, two overseas bars, the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge on March 18, 1969.
After returning from military service, O’Brien worked as a truck driver for various trucking companies throughout his career.
He is survived by his sister, Christine A. O’Brien of Saugus and her companion, John Sennott of Winthrop; his step-brother, John Mahoney and his wife, Tammy of Florida; and his cousins and caregivers, Stephen C. Baker and his wife, Robin of Medford, Richard Purcell of Everett, and several other cousins.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, October 16 at 11 a.m. at the William R. Carafa & Son Home For Funerals, 389 Washington Ave., Chelsea. Visitation with family will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be held at a later date.
