Those who have tracked Tom Ambrosino’s 12-year tenure as mayor of Revere understood why the Chelsea City Council voted so decisively to appoint him as its new city manager this week.
A substantial pool of applicants competed for the position, with numerous additional inquiries received. Following interviews conducted by both the screening committee and the Council, Ambrosino emerged as the selection, reflecting recognition of his exceptional qualifications, municipal background, and strong academic record.
Chelsea residents and observers alike extend congratulations to Tom on his appointment to this significant role leading the city. As city manager, he will direct daily operations across all municipal departments and oversee a $150 million budget—a substantial undertaking ahead of him.
Tom’s readiness for this challenge is evident from his track record in Revere, where he presided over considerable growth and accomplishment during his tenure. Among his achievements as mayor are four new, state-of-the-art schools constructed to serve Revere students. Prioritizing quality, comprehensive education, Tom credits retiring Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Dakin for his instrumental role in establishing Revere’s nationally recognized school system.
Additional accomplishments Tom points to with pride include the Wonderland Station area’s revitalization and the infrastructure development that accompanied it, as well as the Wonderland pedestrian bridge opening, both projects he oversaw during his mayoral years.
Tom’s own education began at Revere High School, where English teacher Carol Tye profoundly influenced him by fostering his love of reading and commitment to education. A National Honor Society member at Revere High, he went on to graduate from Boston University and attend Harvard Law School.
Before his mayoral election in 1999, Tom served on both the Revere School Committee and City Council. During his 12 years as mayor, he brought positive attention and statewide prominence to Revere, establishing himself as an effective municipal leader.
Notably, when Tom left office, he ensured Revere’s financial health by leaving more than $2 million in free cash reserves, providing his successor, Mayor Dan Rizzo, with a stronger foundation to advance the city further.
