USA Boxing New England Championship at Chelsea High School Hosted by John Ruiz and Quietman Sports
This Saturday night, the second round of the 130th annual USA Boxing New England Championships will take place at Chelsea High School, presented by Quietman Sports Gym. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the first match beginning at 7 p.m.
Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz, the first and only world heavyweight champion of Hispanic heritage, owns and operates Quietman Sports Gym in Medford, MA.
Competitors who win in the open and novice divisions will earn spots in the championship finals on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Plymouth Memorial Hall (doors at 5 p.m., first match at 7 p.m.). Those crowned 2015 USA Boxing N.E. champions in each weight class will move on to the USA National Championships.

Over the last 50 years, the USA Boxing New England Championships have produced world champions including Brockton, MA middleweight “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler (1973) and Providence, RI welterweight Demetrious “Boo Boo” Andrade (2005-2006). U.S. Olympians have also emerged from the competition, such as Andrade and Providence super heavyweight Jason “Big Six” Estrada (2001-2002-2003), Providence middleweight/heavyweight Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (2000 & 2004), Worcester, MA middleweight Edwin Rodriguez (2008), and Framingham, MA welterweight Danny “Bhoy” O’Connor.

CHS boys soccer team falls in state tourney
Monday evening on the CHS field, the Chelsea High boys soccer team faced Masconomet in a quarterfinal contest in the Division 2 North Sectional of the MIAA Boys State Soccer Tournament and came out on the short end of a 3-0 decision against a strong squad.

The Red Devils entered the tourney as the top-seeded team in the D-2 North, posting a 15-1-2 regular season record. They battled Masco (the ninth seed at 13-4-3) evenly in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie after 40 minutes.
Shortly after intermission, Masco broke through on a free kick from 40 yards out when a Masco player volleyed the delivery. Just five minutes later, another set-play off a corner kick made it 2-0. With an impenetrable Masco defense, the Red Devils could not mount a comeback.

Friday evening, Coach Mick Milutinovic’s Red Devils opened tourney play with a 3-1 victory over Woburn on the local turf. Derilson DePina, breaking past Woburn defenders to grab a pass from Eric DePina over the top of the Woburn defense, made a superb play that gave Chelsea a lead midway through the first half. He beat the Woburn keeper to the bouncing ball, headed it over the keeper, and continued past him to put the ball into the open net.
Protasowicki marveled.
Ten minutes before the intermission, Carlos Cruz increased the CHS advantage to 2-0 by gathering a loose ball off a corner kick delivered by Kevin Umanzor-Torres. The ball came through the gaggle of players in front of the Woburn goal, and Cruz, positioned on the far side of the goal-mouth, put home the loose ball.
Woburn closed the gap to 2-1 with a marker 10 minutes after intermission, but Carlos sealed the CHS win with his second goal of the contest, scoring with 15 minutes remaining on a brilliant individual effort in which he got past a Woburn defender at the end line and beat the Woburn keeper to the near post.
Being the top seed in the D-2 North actually worked against Chelsea in scheduling terms. The Red Devils had to wait until Saturday to face the Woburn-Greater Lowell preliminary round winner and then came back with just one day’s rest to play Masconomet Monday. Masco, by contrast, played Friday (a 2-0 win over eighth-seeded Danvers) and had two full days of rest.
The Red Devils’ season remains hugely successful despite the tourney loss. They captured the Large School Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference with an undefeated league record. Chelsea also defeated and tied Everett, their arch-rival non-league foe and a Division 1 team that knocked off East Boston, the number one-seed of the D-1 North Sectional, in their state tourney contest Friday.
DePina is CAC MVP; four others named all-stars
At the recent meeting of Commonwealth Athletic Conference coaches, the Chelsea High boys soccer team received numerous accolades.
Junior Derilson DePina earned the league’s Most Valuable Player honor. Teammates Carlos Cartagena, Kevin Umanzor-Torres, Eric DePina, and Wilber Alfaro-Castro were selected to the CAC all-star team.
Red Devils win second straight
Friday evening at West Roxbury, the Chelsea High football team defeated West Roxbury 20-16 for its second consecutive victory.
This Friday evening, Coach Jack Halas and his squad will host Latin Academy under the lights at the CHS field.
Red Devil Turkey Trot set for Nov. 21
The Chelsea High boys and girls track programs are announcing the first-ever Red Devil Turkey Trot, scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at 10 a.m. at Admiral’s Hill.
The event will feature a 5K (3.1 miles) road race and a 3K walk around Admiral’s Hill. Entry is $25.00 and includes a race T-shirt (while supplies last).
