Though it may seem unusual to those accustomed to viewing the Chelsea Street Bridge as an eyesore—serving as it does as the passage between East Boston and Chelsea—the structure being constructed promises to represent a triumph of contemporary engineering and building techniques. An opportunity exists to position this new bridge as the focal point of a comprehensive initiative designed to transform these passages in ways that will leave arriving and departing visitors with a favorable impression of both the bridge itself and its surroundings. The sidewalks should incorporate trees. Illumination designed to showcase the construction’s aesthetic qualities should be incorporated into the design. To neglect these finishing touches would amount to completing a new bridge while failing to present it in its best light.
