An illegal dental operation was discovered in a basement on Essex Street last Friday in what authorities are characterizing as resembling a scene from a horror movie. Acting on an anonymous tip received by police, Fire, Inspectional Service’s and Chelsea Police responded to 97 Essex St. to look into the complaint. The investigators found a small partitioned area in the basement containing dental instruments, blood evidence suggesting a recent procedure had taken place, and other indicators of an active dentist office. The rudimentary nature of the equipment and the unsanitary basement conditions alarmed both Inspectors and Chelsea Officers. City Health Officials have expressed concern regarding what medical procedures may have been conducted in such an unclean environment. Authorities are urging residents that illegal operations of this type present a serious public health risk and should be reported to authorities without delay. The Police and City Inspectors working on the investigation currently lack information about the person or persons running the unlicensed operation, though they are collaborating with building tenants and neighbors in an effort to identify those responsible. Chelsea residents should know they can report information anonymously to the Police Department through the 24 hr Crime Stoppers TIP line at 617-466-4880, or by texting the word Chelsea followed by their message to tip411 (847411) from a cell phone. The Police Departments website at www.chelseapolice.com also accepts anonymous web tips.
