A hostage situation on Spruce Street ended without injury, as Chelsea police apprehended the suspects and secured them in custody. What might have transpired—rather than what actually did—prompted the considerable and conscientious response that unfolded. From beginning to end, the Chelsea Police Department executed its duties with precision, employing every precaution and available resource to address potential scenarios. The Boston Swat Team and its armored vehicles were deployed after initial reports suggested that gunmen responsible for a robbery at a Spencer Avenue residence were holding hostages. In a moment many witnessed on television, Chief Brian Kyes personally took one suspect into custody, applying handcuffs himself. It is uncommon for a police chief to make an arrest directly, which is why we commend Chief Kyes and extend our appreciation to all members of the Chelsea Police force who responded to Sunday morning’s incident on Spruce Street. The situation was resolved peacefully and successfully through careful judgment and meticulous attention to procedure. No injuries occurred. This represents exemplary police work.
