Stephen “Shalom” Karp PhD, a retired researcher at Stanford Research Institute, passed away on May 6 following an extended illness. He was 70. A Chelsea native, Karp earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University before serving in the US Navy under Admiral Rickover. He went on to complete his Doctorate at Northwestern University, where he worked concurrently at Bell Labs. For many years he made his home in Palo Alto, CA, working at and eventually retiring from Stanford Research Institute. At the time of his death in Adventura, Florida, Karp was known as an accomplished artist, musician and inventor. He leaves behind his sister Cheryl (Kenneth) and brother Alan (Laurel), along with nieces and nephews. His services were held privately.
