Harry Wellins
Postal Service retiree; fought in World War II Battle of the Bulge and was a German Prisoner of War
Harry Wellins, who was born in Chelsea and spent his later years as a resident of Pembroke Pines, Florida, passed away on December 23 at age 96.
A decorated World War II army veteran, Mr. Wellins saw combat during the Battle of the Bulge and spent time as a prisoner of war in Germany. Following his military service, he enjoyed a career with the U.S. Postal Service before retiring. Throughout his life, he maintained his enthusiasm for Boston sports, particularly the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots.
His parents were Selig and Rachel Wilensky. He was preceded in death by his siblings Benjamin Wellins, Martha Kempner and Belle Chernak, as well as his stepsibling Lorraine Pearl. His surviving family includes his stepsister Joan Chernoff, his niece Beverly Sherwat of Washington, D.C., and three nephews: Robert Chernak of Gaithersburg, Maryland, James Kempner of Jacksonville, Florida, and Richard Wellins of San Francisco, California. He leaves behind six great-nieces and nephews and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.
A service will take place in the Washington, D.C., area, with interment at the military cemetery in Quantico, Virginia.
