Head coach Al Generazzo directed the Northeast Regional softball team through another strong campaign. A physical education instructor at Chelsea High School, Generazzo maintains deep roots in the community—his late father, Al Generazzo Sr., was a celebrated CHS athlete honored in the Sports Hall of Fame. “I always root for Chelsea High in sports except when they’re playing our team in softball,” said Generazzo. “The Chelsea softball coach is doing an excellent job with his team.” The Golden Knights finished with a 9-9 record this season, narrowly losing four contests by a single run while securing a State Tournament invitation. In their tournament opener against a formidable Winthrop squad, Northeast came close but fell short, 5-3. “Jackie was our workhorse this season – she pitched every inning,” said Generazzo. “She’s one of the nicest kids I’ve ever coached.”
Senior captain and two-time CAC All-Star Mercedes Griffin anchored the team from behind the plate, combining average hitting with power at the plate. Her future takes her to Stonehill College. Another two-time All-Star selection, captain Jillian Heinstrom, concluded her four-year starting tenure at third base with distinction. Moving up from the junior varsity program, sophomore pitcher Jackie Cuzuzza emerged as a valuable contributor, assuming the No. 1 pitching role. Among other contributors, sophomore shortstop Toni DeSimone delivered stellar defensive work during the Winthrop matchup and added two crucial hits. Team captain Shannon Bentley, competing as the starting left fielder despite missing portions of the season, provided important production down the stretch. Freshman centerfielder Heather Toussaint projects as a future standout. Rounding out the roster, third-year second baseman Stephanie Velez and sophomore first baseman Sam Olson both performed solidly and should bolster the lineup going forward.
