A 27-year-old Leominster resident, Juan Oliva, faced arraignment Monday in Chelsea District Court following allegations of involvement in a shooting that occurred in Chelsea over the weekend.
Oliva was charged with armed assault in a dwelling, armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm.
The prosecution sought bail set at $25,000, along with conditions requiring GPS monitoring, a curfew, and distance from witnesses. Judge Matthew Nestor instead set bail at $5,000 and mandated GPS monitoring. Oliva was further ordered to maintain distance from the victim’s residence and the hospital where the victim is being treated, as well as to avoid contact with another man connected to the incident.
Shortly before midnight on Saturday, Chelsea Police and State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office arrived at a Carter Street home after a shooting during a confrontation.
According to the prosecution’s account, Oliva and a second man went to the Carter Street residence to confront the victim regarding an alleged assault of another person from earlier that day. During the ensuing physical altercation between Oliva and the victim, the second man fired a shot, striking the victim in the leg and lower torso.
The injuries sustained were not deemed life-threatening. The victim was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Through their investigation, Chelsea and State police identified Oliva. Working with the Leominster Police Department, authorities located his vehicle at his residence the following morning and arrested him.
