For years, the Chelsea Walk has served as an unappealing passage connecting Broadway to the less desirable alleyways situated behind the business district.
As Broadway continues to receive increased investment and attention, both the City and GreenRoots have set their sights on transforming the Chelsea Walk into a welcoming focal point rather than allowing it to remain overlooked.

On Friday night, GreenRoots and City Manager Tom Ambrosino made an announcement: the organization had secured a MassDevelopment grant aimed at converting the Chelsea Walk from a dark, uninviting space into a vibrant destination featuring art, color, and lighting.
There is, however, a condition attached to this grant.
The funding requires a matching contribution raised through crowdfunding—a method where numerous individuals pool resources to support a project—by June 8. Currently, fundraising efforts have brought in more than $3,000, leaving GreenRoots with fewer than 40 days to secure the remaining $17,000.
Chelsea Chamber of Commerce President Sergio Jaramillo characterized the initiative as an effort to “ make the area a place where people feel safe.”
He further noted that “It is all about making our community better.”
City Manager Tom Ambrosino urged community members to contribute according to their means.
“To the extent you can donate something, it will really benefit the city,” Ambrosino stated.
This campaign builds on the momentum from two popular summer events during which GreenRoots and the City created temporary “park-lets” on Broadway for a day—an initiative that resonated strongly with residents, business owners, and the general public. The Chelsea Walk project represents a continuation of that vision.
