STEPHANIE SIMON MAKES MORE CHS TRACK HISTORY
At the MIAA all-state meet held this past Saturday at Fitchburg State University, Stephanie Simon etched her name into Chelsea High history by becoming the first girl from the school to participate in three events at the competition.
The sophomore’s performance was impressive across the board. She placed 11th in the high jump with a leap of 5′-4″; 15th in the 100 dash with a time of 12.65; and 17th in the triple jump with a distance of of 35′-3″. “While none of the performances were personal bests for Stephanie, she performed well competing in multiple events,” said CHS coach Mark Martineau.
Also representing Chelsea at the all-state meet was senior Martine Simon, who earned 18th place in the triple jump with a distance of 35′-2″.
The Simon sisters, along with junior Jocelyn Poste, will next compete in the state heptathlon this Tuesday and Thursday at North Reading High School.
SPORTS MUSEUM HOSTS 2018 STAND STRONG GRADUATION
On June 4, the Sports Museum held its 2018 Stand Strong Graduation ceremony at TD Garden in Legends. Young participants from the Jordan Boys and Girls Club of Chelsea received framed certificates recognizing their completion of the program during a ceremony overseen by Michelle Gormley, the Sports Museum’s Director of Education.
Rusty Sullivan, the Sports Museum’s Executive Director, and Northeastern University basketball standout Jeremy Miller facilitated a question-and-answer session with the attending youths. Miller addressed inquiries including his height (6-foot, 9 and three-quarter-inches), his favorite NBA team (San Antonio Spurs), and his timeline for entering the NBA draft (in 2019).
The young attendees were particularly moved by Miller’s account of maintaining composure following a knee injury sustained during his freshman year. Through dedicated rehabilitation efforts, he transformed into a standout performer for Northeastern’s competitive squad, which is positioned to seek an NCAA Tournament berth in the upcoming season.
Beyond basketball, Miller shared his passion for improvisational comedy, acting, and music. The youths responded enthusiastically to his presence, and he spent time signing autographs and posing for photographs.
Stand Strong functions as a 12-week character development initiative centered on five core values: Teamwork, Courage, Fairness, Determination, and Responsibilty. The program incorporates multiple field trips designed to reinforce character development through engaging, activity-based learning experiences.
FUN-DAMENTAL BASKETBALL CAMP TO START
The Immaculate Conception Parish Center at 59 Summer Street in Everett will host the popular FUN-damental Basketball Camp from July 16-July 20. This program welcomes boys and girls from the surrounding area who are entering grades three thru nine as of September 2018.
Camp hours run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and registration costs $100 per participant. Tony Ferullo, the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, directs the camp.
Participants will engage in skill drills, competitive scrimmages, and individual contests while receiving a t-shirt, certificate and medal. Notable guests will attend to offer basketball insights, and an awards ceremony concluding the final day welcomes parents and friends.
