The Massachusetts Center for the Book (MCB) has launched a Gateway City Library Trail within its MassBook Trails app, recognizing how essential public libraries are to their communities.
The Chelsea Public Library is included on this trail because it delivers equitable access to books and contemporary pathways to opportunity for its users by means of digital resources and programs that support continuous learning and cultural integration.
“This trail underscores the unique history, architecture, and attributes of each Gateway City library,” states Sharon Shaloo, who serves as Executive Director of Mass Center for the Book. “Some are ‘Carnegie Libraries,’ built through the generosity of philanthropist and industrialist Andrew Carnegie; others had humble beginnings as a shelf of books to loan at the local general store. But this trail also reflects the common mission of these public institutions that is as important today as it ever was: our public libraries are centerpieces of civic engagement and advancement and benefit from the local, state and federal support they receive to further their objectives.”
Since its 2017 launch, MassBook Trails has grown from two literary walking tours in Boston and two statewide trails—Literary Museums of Massachusetts and African American Writers Heritage Trail—to include additional tours. The platform is accessible via web browser and as a free mobile app. Libraries across the state continue to join by creating their own local literary, cultural, and historic tours in partnership with MCB.
As the Commonwealth Affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Massachusetts Center for the Book operates as a public-private partnership dedicated to fostering cultural programming that promotes books and reading while expanding the reach of Massachusetts public libraries.
