An investigation into a workplace accident at Bellingham Square has been launched by both local authorities and the Federal Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The incident, which occurred last week at the construction site, left two workers injured when their equipment struck an electrical line, triggering an explosion. According to police, the two employees of Tuffs Incorporated of Medford were operating below street level in an excavated area when the contact happened. Both men were extracted from the site and avoided critical injuries. A 50-year-old Everett resident was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, though his condition was not considered life-threatening. The other worker, a 27-year-old Everett man, received treatment on-site. The accident forced the closure of the busy downtown section while crews worked to secure the area, and drivers were advised to find alternate routes. The disruption also reached Logan Airport, since Massport officials confirmed that the airport’s electrical supply runs through Chelsea. A brief power outage that morning caused the facility’s backup systems to activate.
