The Boston Globe recently published an article in which several supposedly influential RepubIican party members expressed disappointment with Gov. Charlie Baker, contending he has governed in an overly “liberal” manner.
Their grievances center on two areas: his backing of causes they label “liberal,” as well as his approval of the newly implemented “grand bargain” that includes a minimum wage increase and other provisions. They are upset with his support both for social causes they deem “liberal” and for his assent to the recently-enacted, so-called “grand bargain” that will raise the minimum wage, among other items.
Yet the core of their frustration appears to stem from a single fact: Gov. Charlie Baker enjoys the highest approval rating among governors nationwide with his own constituents. These critics seem to long for a different kind of governor altogether—one defined by combativeness, negativity and insult, essentially a Donald Trump-style figure devoted to spreading discord and resentment.
Massachusetts ought to count its blessings. Looking at the dysfunction plaguing Washington and the acrimony dividing governors from their opponents in numerous states, our Commonwealth benefits tremendously from having Charlie Baker leading us forward.
In measurable terms, Massachusetts distinguishes itself among the states—particularly in public school performance—but our true distinction lies elsewhere: in the mutual respect demonstrated by our state leaders and their collaborative approach to governance.
Disagreement without personal attack and compromise as political principle—these guide how state business gets conducted here.
These so-called Republicans overlook four crucial facts about Charlie Baker:
First, he ranks among the most candid and direct governors to serve the Commonwealth;
Second, he campaigned explicitly for the legislation he has signed into law. He has delivered on his promises to voters—a refreshing novelty in politics!;
Third, as a Republican governing a True Blue state with veto-proof Democratic-controlled legislature majorities, Gov. Baker and the legislature have accomplished as much for Massachusetts residents over four years as any previous administrations, Democratic ones included; and
Finally, Charlie Baker has staffed his administration with capable professionals devoted to public service, exemplified by Jay Ash, the secretary of housing and economic development.
Massachusetts residents overwhelmingly believe the state is moving in a positive direction, and they credit our governor, Charlie Baker, with that progress.
Dissenters certainly have the right to their view.
Fortunately, Charlie Baker has resisted pressure toward divisiveness and discord. The Commonwealth is advancing—and Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration has unquestionably been instrumental in our achievements over the past four years.
