An exhibit by the Chelsea Hunger Network is now on display at Gallery 456 and will remain there until the 8th Annual Chelsea Empty Bowls community fundraising event on April 18.
Since September 2018, 19 groups have organized over 300 “community artists” in Chelsea to paint a wide range of ceramic bowls and mugs. A selection of these vibrant, functional art pieces—fired in the kilns of Salem State’s Art + Design department—are currently on view in the gallery. Alongside the display of decorated ceramics, a collage showcases various artists, as well as groups and individuals at work. Many of those photographed are well-known community members, including Chelsea’s City Manager, Tom Ambrosino.
Another section of the gallery features large color posters that highlight the identities of the 19 participating groups and provide further information about the Chelsea Hunger Network. An infographic also outlines the contributing factors that have led to a rise in food insecurity and hunger within the community.
The 8th Annual Chelsea Empty Bowls event will be held on April 18, from 5-7 p.m., at the Williams School located at 180 Walnut St. Attendees can choose from hundreds of bowls and mugs and serve themselves from an all-you-can-eat menu featuring delicious clam chowder, chili, soups, and Toscanini’s ice cream. Tickets are priced at $20, with a $25 fee at the door, and can be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com under “Chelsea Empty Bowls”. Children under 8 years old will enter for free.
