Jocelyn Poste, a Chelsea High graduate, has earned multiple distinctions during her time at the school. She serves as class president, achieved Salutatorian status in the Class of 2019, and was named the best female athlete of the year. Beyond these accolades, the 18-year-old has also distinguished herself as a dedicated community activist.
Finding a single title to describe Poste’s high school experience proves difficult, as her accomplishments span many areas.
Among her notable contributions this year was her role in a group of students who successfully advocated for outdoor graduation exercises to be held at the Stadium. Despite encountering obstacles, the group persevered in their efforts.
According to Poste, this experience will have a lasting impact on her future. “I never really got involved with politics
until that happened,” she said. “There were plenty of people who said we
couldn’t do it. We kept at it and it worked. I talked with Damali Vidot
(Council President) about it and she said we had to come back and take her seat
when we’re older. I don’t know if I would get into politics, but I want to be a
voice for the people certainly.”
Poste’s educational journey began at the Silber ELC, followed by attendance at the Kelly School and Clark Avenue Middle School.
She will pursue her studies at Union College as a Posse Scholar, which provides her with a full scholarship to the New York institution along with an academic support network. Though initially hesitant about attending college out of state, Poste determined that the Posse Scholarship presented an opportunity she could not decline.
Her focus at Union College will be biology, as she works toward her goal of becoming a dermatologist.
This aspiration was inspired by a viral video she watched during middle school called Dr. Pimple Popper, which she credits with directing her toward the field.
Poste expressed gratitude toward her parents, Steven Poste and Angela Burgos, for their support throughout her high school years.
