Three neighborhoods are poised for significant transformation, with several major developments either preparing to launch or in preliminary planning phases. The most substantial undertaking involves a 238-unit market rate residential project slated for Sixth Street, occupying the former Thomas Strahan wallpaper manufacturing plant site—a sizable vacant parcel adjacent to Route 1. According to city officials, the old industrial location has undergone clearing and received development approval, with the permitting phase now underway. City officials cautioned, however, that considerable time typically elapses between the start of permitting and actual construction commencement. A second significant development centers on the AJ Wright Store’s arrival at the Marketbasket Mall, within the former Marketbasket building anticipated to accommodate multiple tenants upon completion. The AJ Wright location is slated to open on October 28. Progress on the Webster Block initiative at the Webster Avenue and Eastern Avenue intersection is readily apparent to passersby. Converting a largely neglected parcel that previously contained an obsolete factory structure—recently demolished—this ambitious undertaking will yield 120 market rate rental units. The project benefited substantially from support by Governor Deval Patrick, whose administration awarded a $500,000 grant for essential public infrastructure improvements, assistance instrumental to the project’s viability. The finished structure will comprise four stories and incorporate noteworthy architectural design. Currently, pilings are being installed at the construction site.
