Across the nation, including in Chelsea, residents have reacted with horror to the tragic shootings that took place in Arizona. The incident left six people dead and 13 others wounded—innocent lives either ended or forever altered by the deliberate actions of a killer. There will be those who contend the gunman was or is mentally ill and therefore should not be held responsible for what occurred. We believe his constitutional rights must be protected fully, that he should receive a prompt and impartial trial, and that following such a trial, he should face the penalty he has earned, which is death.
