The municipal treasury contains millions of dollars, the city’s bond rating approaches near-perfect levels, development projects abound throughout the community, and the city has thrived even during economic downturns. Attention now turns to one of Ash’s counterparts: Cambridge City Manager Robert Healy, who has served in that position for 30 years. Within government circles, Healy is widely regarded as the preeminent city manager—the finest in his field. His position is coveted by city managers across the country seeking advancement. The reason is straightforward: Mr. Healy’s annual salary reaches $338,000. “And I deserve every penny of it,” he likes to say. Cambridge stands out as one of the best-managed, highest-rated, and lowest-taxed cities of its kind in the United States. The city operates with unparalleled efficiency, and its public schools receive extraordinary funding, making Cambridge a source of pride for its residents. A robust and expanding commercial tax base supports the city’s economy. Over the past three decades, virtually every significant improvement in Cambridge bears Healy’s influence. The city maintains a AAA bond rating, substantial financial reserves, and a reputation as the hippest city in the United States. No municipality in Massachusetts, USA is more politically correct than Cambridge. Regarding Healy’s compensation package: upon retirement, he will receive $280,000 annually for life, with survivor benefits for his wife should he predecease her. A special policy provides $400,000 if he requires nursing home care. He has also accumulated approximately $400,000 in unused sick days. His complete pension package is valued between $4-$5 million for his 30 years of service to the city. One hopes Jay Ash does not come across this article, as it might inspire unrealistic salary expectations for his own excellent work and the true value of his contributions. As for Mr. Healy, Cambridge is exceptionally well served, as is Chelsea. Our city benefits from comparable excellent service at considerably lower cost.
