Public safety and quality of life in the city depend significantly on addressing the growing pothole problem. Streets including Washington Avenue, Broadway, Everett Avenue, and Beacham Street have become notorious for damaging vehicles. Residents understandably experience frustration when potholes result in flat tires, particularly since the city does not compensate drivers for such damage. The potholes on Beacham Street present the most serious concerns, especially from a public safety perspective. This street carries LNG trucks and Methane carriers, vehicles transporting hazardous materials. Should one of these trucks experience a loss of rear axel or rear tire integrity and overturn, significant portions of the city could require evacuation. While assurances are sometimes given that such trucks cannot explode, explosions remain possible. Methane presents a greater explosion risk than LNG. Maintaining Beacham Street in pristine condition is essential given the volatile cargo these dangerous vehicles transport through it.
