Congressman Markey is Right

Chelsea, Massachusetts

The reasoning put forth by Congressman Edward Markey deserves serious consideration: nuclear plants currently in the planning stages should not be constructed along earthquake fault lines. We believe he is absolutely correct, and his proposal should carry the force of law. Permitting nuclear reactors to operate on fault lines would represent a reckless decision. California’s Diablo Canyon facility already stands as a cautionary example, having been built directly on the San Andreas fault line. In light of recent events in Japan, residents in proximity to such a reactor face genuine peril. Congressman Markey deserves recognition for applying a principle that appears to elude many of his peers in Congress—namely, common sense.
