The renovated Polonia Park at 37 Tremont Street is expected to open to the public on Monday, October 19, with new playground equipment, a fenced-in dog park, a shaded picnic area, a splash pad, seating and new trees and plantings, the City of Chelsea announced. A grand opening celebration, with free ice cream while it lasts, is Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m. at the park.
The rebuild is part of the city’s annual park renovation program, run by the Department of Housing and Community Development, which sought a state PARC grant for the project. Before construction, the city had to deal with possible soil contamination at the park. The Community Preservation Committee allocated $200,000 in Community Preservation Act money to pay for environmental testing of the site and any cleanup needed before the park was rebuilt, according to its project list in the council’s January 12 packet. The application put the total cost of that work at $1,117,293.
