Matthew T. Chagaris, a mason who spent his whole life in Revere and was a grandson of former Ward 5 City Councillor John F. Powers, died October 26 after a fight with brain cancer. He was 43.

Born in Boston on February 24, 1983, he grew up in Revere and graduated from Revere High School with the Class of 2002. He worked as a mason until he was diagnosed, and his family says he faced the illness with strength and perseverance. He died peacefully with his family around him.

He leaves his son, Matthew A. Chagaris; his mother, Jacqueline M. (Powers) Chagaris of Revere, and her fiance, Dennis Anemoduris; and his brothers, Andrew A. Chagaris of Revere and Daniel C. and Nicholas R. Chagaris, both of Derry, New Hampshire, and their wives. His father, Andrew A. Chagaris Jr., died before him, as did his grandmother Maureen Powers. He was an uncle and great-uncle to ten children and leaves aunts and uncles in Revere and Medford, many cousins, and his two cats, Garfield, known as “Monkey,” and Shadow.
