On Sunday, June 2, 2013, Edward P. Doherty Jr. of W. Peabody, a former Chelsea resident, was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Massachusetts Worcester at a ceremony held on the medical school campus. The son of Ret. Chelsea Fire Captain Edward P. Doherty and Linda A. Doherty of W. Peabody, Edward Jr. has a brother, Matthew, who lives in Chelsea. His grandmothers, Pauline M. (Quigley) Doherty of Chelsea and Marilyn (Honey) Klimarchuk of Chelsea, are both proud of his achievement.
A celebration honoring Dr. Doherty’s accomplishment took place on June 8 at Spinelli’s in Lynnfield, MA, attended by family and friends.
Dr. Doherty completed his undergraduate studies in Biology at Boston University in 2007. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School with National Honors, attended the Assumption School in Chelsea, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boys Scouts.
Dr. Doherty will begin his residency in Anesthesiology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA, following his graduation.
Established in 1962 through legislation passed by the Massachusetts legislature, the University of Massachusetts Medical School was founded to provide affordable medical education to state residents and to increase the supply of primary care physicians in underserved regions throughout the state. The school, situated in Worcester in New England’s second largest city, admitted its inaugural class of 16 students in 1970 and currently enrolls 125 students per class.
