Monday night marked the swearing-in of the 2010 Chelsea City Government during a ceremony held in the fully occupied city council chamber. City Clerk Robert Bishop conducted the official oaths for both the city council and the school committee. Bishop expressed particular pride in administering the oath to his daughter Kathleen, who secured a position on the City Council in November. At 21 years old, she is now the youngest city councilor in Massachusetts. Leo Robinson was unanimously elected as the City Council president, while Paula Barton was also unanimously chosen as vice-president. Alongside Bishop, four new council members were sworn in: Attorney Anthony Pellegreno, Richard Maronski, and former councilor Calvin T. Brown. A fifth council member will be announced at a later date after a selection process to fill the vacancy left by former council member Ron Morgese, who stepped down to focus more on his business interests. The 2010 city council includes four women, a record number for the typically mixed governing body. The new School Committee has one new member, Ana Hernandez, who will replace James Dwyer. This committee now has six women members, a historic first for the group. On Tuesday, during a vote by the membership, Lisa Weaver was elected Chairwoman, Edward Ell’s was elected Vice-President, and Rosemarie Carlisle was elected Delegate to the School Committee.
