State Senator Anthony Galluccio was taken into custody Monday afternoon after violating conditions of his house arrest related to a hit-and-run incident that occurred in Cambridge the previous October. He has since resigned from his senate seat. In a letter addressed to Senate President Therese Murray, Galluccio expressed remorse for his conduct and stated that he took full responsibility, while simultaneously asserting his innocence regarding the underlying charges.
During proceedings in a Medford courtroom Monday late afternoon, Judge Matthew Nestor imposed a one-year jail sentence on Galluccio. The judge rejected Galluccio’s explanation that toothpaste he had been using was responsible for his failure on multiple Breathalyzer tests administered at his home in December, when probation officials first installed the monitoring device. Following the sentencing, court officers placed Galluccio in handcuffs and removed him from the courtroom. He was transported to the Middlesex County Jail in Cambridge, where he is expected to serve out his sentence.
During the court hearing, Galluccio testified that he had abstained from alcohol since being placed on probation on December 18. Judge Nestor’s demeanor made clear his skepticism of this claim. “I’m satisfied that, in fact, the defendant ingested alcohol,” Nestor stated from the bench, as the Boston Herald reported. “He didn’t last a week. The suspended sentence is revoked.”

Galluccio’s history includes a 1984 arrest for driving under the influence and another such arrest in 1997. In 2005, he was found to have been intoxicated when he struck three vehicles in Boston. Most recently, in October, he struck a vehicle from behind and left the scene; a child was injured in that accident. Galluccio entered a guilty plea and received a sentence of home confinement.
