This week’s ballot announcement for the November City Election reveals four competitive races—one at-large contest and three district-level matchups.
In District 1, former City Clerk Bob Bishop has unexpectedly entered the race, challenging incumbent Paul Murphy. Bishop, who previously served as an alderman and whose daughter recently held the District 1 seat, will face off against Murphy in the Prattville area, known as the city’s most active and vocal neighborhood.
Murphy, the son of popular Chelsea District Court Magistrate Kevin Murphy, brings the advantage of incumbency. Political observers are divided on the outcome, with some believing Bishop will mount a serious challenge while others contend Murphy’s current strength in the district may prove decisive.
District 2 presents another unexpected contest. Todd Nordstrom, a Washington Avenue resident and family man, has launched a campaign against Chris Cataldo. Nordstrom’s visibility during the extensive Washington Avenue rehabilitation project appears to have motivated his political entry.
Cataldo has maintained a relatively low profile at City Hall, though he has served his district adequately. The outcome will likely depend on which candidate works harder to connect with voters.
District 5 features the already well-publicized battle between challenger Henry Wilson and incumbent Joe Perlatonda. The two have already clashed, and campaigning in this district has intensified.
The at-large race involves four candidates competing for three available seats. Political veteran Deborah Washington stands as the sole challenger against three sitting incumbents: Leo Robinson, Calvin Brown, and Brian Hatleberg. All three incumbents have demonstrated strong popularity and political influence, maintaining active participation in Council meetings over recent years.
Washington has committed to an aggressive campaign, though she faces a difficult path. Success in this race will require consistent, vigorous effort from all candidates.
