Chelsea Police detectives have arrested a 25 year-old Chelsea man in connection with a homicide that occurred late Monday night on Grove Street. The city’s first homicide of the New Year, the case resulted in charges against Marvin Garcia, a Grove Street resident, who entered a plea of innocent when arraigned in Chelsea District Court on Wednesday morning. Garcia is being held without bail set at $250,000. The victim, Israel Vasquez, 50, is believed by those familiar with the investigation to have shared an apartment at 96 Grove Street with the accused. Early Tuesday morning, a local woman discovered the victim’s body stuffed in a trash can positioned behind a utility vehicle at 114 Grove Street after spotting the barrel and alerting authorities. According to investigative sources, the victim had sustained severe cuts and slashes. Following the collection of evidence by Chelsea and State Police detectives, who secured the scene, Garcia was taken into custody.
