Nine individuals and organizations will receive recognition at the 12th Annual “All-Chelsea Awards” on Monday, Sept. 30th. These recipients have made meaningful contributions to the community and strengthened Chelsea’s civic life.
Jay Ash, who serves as City Manager and coordinates the All-Chelsea Awards (ACA) Committee, offered this perspective: “A significant reason that Chelsea’s stock continues to be on the rise is the contribution of so many towards the advancement of our community. These nine are representative of all the good that many do to promote our city and address the needs of our residents. We are fortunate to have them working among us,”
Previous honoree Leo Robinson, now serving as City Council President, shared his thoughts: “It’s getting tougher and tougher to single out award winners because so many are stepping up to make a difference in Chelsea. In the end, we are all winners because the inspiring efforts and overall civic spirit these champions and others contribute to do truly set our community apart,”
The centerpiece of this year’s ceremony recognizes the late Richard Clayman with the “Lifetime Achievement” award. Clayman’s legacy encompasses his legal career, dedication to charitable causes, and deep commitment to Chelsea before his death last spring.
According to Morrie Seigal, himself a past Lifetime Achievement awardee, “Richie was truly special. I know his presence will be felt when our community has this important opportunity to recognize him,”
Eight additional awards acknowledge accomplishments and service from the past year: Public Official – Gerry McCue; Community Organization – Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop Elder Services; Business – Barry Kirshon; Resident under 21 – Amairani Parras; Resident 21-64 – Mike Sandoval; Resident 65 and older – Melissa Shook; Contributing Stakeholder – Herbie Kupersmith; and Project – Say No to Ethanol.
A broad coalition of residents and civic leaders makes up the ACA Committee, which in turn selects a 24-member ACA Selection Committee. This committee evaluated more than 50 nominations through a rigorous process. Governed by established bylaws, the selection system emphasizes fairness, neutrality, and impartiality. Winners emerged from a secret ballot vote.
Ash explained the methodology: “Apolitical and without agendas best describes the process,” “Our community leaders take serious their responsibilities and really work to judge people and organizations based upon the merits of their accomplishments. The results of the voting speak for themselves.”
The ceremony takes place in City Hall’s City Council Chambers and airs live on Chelsea Community Cable Television starting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 30.
