A recent proposal by the city council to modify the Minimum Residential Tax Factor drew sharp division among members. Councilors Roy Avellaneda, Paula Barton, Matt Frank and Marilyn Vega-Torres championed the measure, which would have shifted advantages toward commercial properties at the expense of residential ones. However, Councilors Stan Troisi, Mike MeKonnen, Roseanne Bongiovanni, Deborah Washington, Brian Hatleberg and Ron Morgese united in opposition, successfully blocking the initiative. Given that homeowners and residential property owners already face substantial tax burdens in Chelsea, the defeated proposal would have only added to their financial strain. The six councilors who voted against it deserve recognition for their stance. The question remains: what motivated the other councilors to consider placing additional weight on residential taxpayers during a time when every dollar matters to them?
