Jonathan Carvalho, 20, of East Boston, grew up in Chelsea where he is well known. He was ordered held without bail after being officially charged with the August 10 homicide of 29-year-old Luis Rodriguez, also of Chelsea. Additional charges include unlawfully carrying a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. According to police reports, Carvalho allegedly fired 5 shots at Rodriguez, striking him in the back and face. The Central Avenue homicide has deeply affected the community, particularly those acquainted with both the victim and the accused. Carvalho’s family maintains a prominent and respected standing in the city, and the charges have left them devastated. On Monday afternoon outside the Chelsea courthouse, approximately 100 supporters of Rodriguez assembled to speak with reporters and others about the victim. They described him as a devoted father, churchgoer, and hardworking man. Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis presented evidence to the court that around 12:30 p.m. on the day of the shooting, Carvalho arrived at Rodriguez’s Central Avenue residence accompanied by another person. That individual knocked on Rodriguez’s apartment door and, when Rodriguez answered, informed him that Carvalho was waiting outside. The defendant and victim had experienced a prior dispute in the weeks preceding the shooting, apparently involving a woman. An altercation between the two men immediately preceded the homicide. Galatis told the court that witnesses observed “pacing and agitated” in the apartment building parking lot. When Rodriguez came outside, Galatis explained, the two men circled each other briefly before Carvalho drew a 9mm handgun from his waist and opened fire. As Rodriguez turned to flee back into the building, Carvalho allegedly pursued him with his arm extended and discharged two additional shots. “One of those shots hit Rodriguez in the back, piercing his lung,” Galatis stated. Rodriguez made his way into the building and up the stairs before collapsing in his girlfriend’s apartment. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Carvalho left the scene and subsequently fled the state. Community members in East Boston and Chelsea provided investigators with several tips suggesting he was heading to relatives in Florida. A warrant for his arrest was issued the night of August 10, and police tracked him to a bus bound for Florida. Though he eluded capture in Washington D.C., U.S. Marshals working with Chelsea Police and State Police from Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley’s office apprehended Carvalho in Savannah, Georgia, on August 12—just 36 hours after the murder. Investigators acknowledged the community’s essential contribution to Carvalho’s arrest. Chelsea Police Captain Keith Houghton stated that his department received numerous calls containing relevant information. he said. Attorney John Hayes represents Carvalho. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 17.
